While some of us are able to innovate or create under any circumstances, most of us require a basic level of emotional health and well-being in order to consistently produce good work. It’s easy to forget that some very basic habits can do wonders to create the right frame of mind in which this happens. Today, guest writer Captain Obvious has dropped by to compile a handy cheat sheet for you, because we all need this reminder more often that we’d admit.
Step 1: Make a list of those things that give you actual joy. Like, breath of fresh air, sparkles and unicorns joy. If you’re a creative person, chances are you’ve already identified what these are. They’re the things that, when you wake up in the morning, you’d say “wow, I can’t believe I get to do that today!” If you haven’t yet identified those joy-giving activities for yourself, then now is the time to start. For me, those are: yoga, writing, sketching, and hanging out with my kids and a cup of tea on the living room floor. For you, those might be basketball, or horse riding - whatever it is, it’s taken you some self awareness to get to recognizing those things, and that’s a great first step.
Step 2: Do one of those things as soon as possible, whether that’s right now for only 60 seconds (yes it’s possible!) or whether it’s scheduling time for later, at least do that now. We often underestimate the potential of a short boost of joy that comes from a simple one minute pause to do that one thing we enjoy - whether that’s calling your significant other to hear their voice, or taking a few meditative breaths, it contributes enormously to your well being and creative health.
Step 3: Repeat. A daily practice is one of the healthiest things you can do for your productivity, your creativity, and your health. Sound new age? That depends on what you choose for your practice. But whether it’s gardening, running, or reiki, regularity provides a lifeline. Even just the anticipation of your daily practice has been shown to produce positive emotions and reduce stress. Without even intending it, the time you invest in this practice will become a way to process emotions productively, leaving you freer to create.
Simple, right? In theory, yes. But on a regular basis, many of us neglect our most basic needs - I know I did for years. The upside though, is that sometimes all it takes is a little nudge to remember what to do. So go on, you’ve got this! Your most creative self is waiting.
